As AI systems evolve from passive tools to autonomous agents that can plan and act independently, coordination becomes the challenge — not just intelligence. That's where the Model Context Protocol (MCP) steps in. Introduced by Anthropic in late 2024 , MCP is a foundational idea: a common framework to manage, orchestrate, and secure AI agents across systems. Think of it as the HTTP of agentic AI — not a model itself, but the glue that lets models talk, act, and collaborate safely.

MCP brings structure to chaos. It defines how agents communicate, what permissions they have, how actions are logged, and how trust is maintained. Imagine a financial analysis system where one agent scrapes data, another runs predictions, and a third generates reports — MCP provides the rules for how they request access, share results, and document their actions. With agent-based systems doing everything from market analysis to code deployment, we need more than raw intelligence — we need governance.

By enabling interoperability between open-source models, APIs, and local tools, MCP makes agentic AI scalable and safe. The protocol faces challenges in standardization and adoption , but the potential impact is clear: MCP could become the invisible backbone of multi-agent ecosystems — the protocol that keeps autonomous AI aligned, traceable, and under human control while still allowing for innovation and growth.
